Stretch marks could appear for any number of reasons. Perhaps you’ve recently shed a few pounds. Maybe you’ve just welcomed your bundle of joy into the world. Or your body has experienced a sudden change for any other reason. Either way, these streaks of uneven elastin can make you feel less than beautiful. The solution? Baking soda for stretch marks!

Also known as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is a naturally-occurring chemical that can even out your skin tone and remove stretch marks. It’s an exfoliant that removes dead skin cells, allowing newer ones to grow with a more even pigment. That, in a nutshell, is how baking soda improves the appearance of stretch marks.

You won’t find a more affordable, yet effective way of removing stretch marks than using baking soda. If your stripes have been preventing you from wearing your favorite dress, flaunting your pretty body on the beach or even taking a selfie, grab yourself a packet of this (usually) powdered leavener and experience magic first-hand.


How Does Baking Soda Work with Stretch Marks?


For most people, when you mention baking soda they immediately think of its leavening properties. Others know it better as an alkaline that’s used to neutralize stomach acid. To those of us who are keen on removing stretch marks, baking soda is an exfoliant that removes dead skin cells and allows new cells to grow.

Exfoliation is one way of reducing the appearance of stretch marks. How so? Because the new cells that grow usually have a more even tone. Besides, this natural chemical also enhances the growth of collagen. Collagen is essential for skin regeneration, which in turn accounts for the growth of new, evenly-toned skin cells.

That’s not to say that you will have a skin that’s completely free of stretch marks. They are permanent in nature but with baking soda, you can make them almost invisible.

And, to add to your list of benefits, it's rich in antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Those two make it an ideal solution for treating rashes, skin irritations, bug bites and small wounds.

How to Use Baking Soda On Stretch Marks


We’ve established that baking soda is a good remedy for stretch marks. But how do you use it? There are two ways. First, you can use it as a stand-alone product. In this case, you will only apply baking soda on your stretch marks.

The second option is using it alongside another skin-treating product. I recommend lemon juice (toner) or coconut oil (moisturizer). Buckle up as I take you through each of the three options.


1.) Baking Soda

You don’t need to combine baking soda for stretch marks with a moisturizer or toner. Instead, you can make a baking soda paste using water only, and then use the mixture to treat stretch marks. Add 3 teaspoons of baking soda for every 1 teaspoon of water.

Rub the mixture gently on your body where stretch marks appear. Use a circular motion and feel free to incorporate a soft cloth for the ultimate self-massage experience. You will feel the fairly hard particles of sodium bicarbonate rubbing against your skin as they exfoliate it.

Don’t be alarmed by that, that’s what they do and that’s how it’s supposed to be. Continue to rub the paste for 7 to 15 minutes and then rinse it off with clean water. Repeat the process at least 2 times a week and you will start to see your stretch marks disappearing in a month or two.

This is the perfect time to mention that you will need to exercise patience. While baking soda is an awesome remedy for stretch marks, it’s not an instant solution.

The results largely depend on how long you’ve had stretch marks and how often you use baking soda. As mentioned, 2 times a week is ideal but you can do it 3 times if you have the time.


2.) Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

Baking soda and lemon juice have a lot in common as far as removing stretch marks. They both exfoliate the skin, and the vitamin C found in lemon keeps the skin evenly toned. Baking soda does that too.

The one part where they differ (to your advantage) is that lemon is a powerful astringent while baking soda doesn’t have that property. Is that a good thing? Absolutely! Applying lemon juice will leave your skin glowing and looking younger.

This combination works best when you use six portions of baking soda for every one of lemon juice. So if you have 6 tablespoons of baking soda you should mix it with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Make a fine paste and then apply it wherever stretch marks appear on your body.

Leave the paste on for 10 to 20 minutes (until it dries out completely) and then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Repeat the process at least 2 times each week.

You may want to know that lemon juice and baking soda and both exfoliants. They will leave your skin feeling dry, so make sure you have a moisturizer in hand. Coconut oil would be the best.


3.) Baking Soda and Coconut Oil

I call coconut oil “the champ of all oils” because of how much it nourishes the skin. Regular application will reduce inflammation, heal wounds and keep your skin hydrated. Now, combine it with baking soda for an evenly pigmented skin that’s radiant and glows.

Put your baking soda in a bowl and then add 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Stir the mixture to make a paste, and then apply it on your stretch marks. Remember to scrub gently in circular motions using a piece of cloth or your bathing loofah.

Rinse off after 10 to 20 minutes. Repeat the process at least 2 times a week and you will start to notice desirable changes on your stretch marks.


Things to Know Before and After Using Baking Soda


Using baking soda for stretch marks is a breeze and you’ll be super impressed by the results. But amid the excitement, please don’t make mistakes that may end up causing harm to your skin. Before Using

Make sure the stretch mark-riddled areas are clean. Warm water is recommended to cleanse any dirt, excess sebum, and dead skin cells. That will make baking soda more effective. There are no rules regarding timing.

Whether it’s at night, in the morning or during the day, you can apply baking soda. I would assume that most people are like me and they prefer to do it at night before they retire to bed.


After Use

This is the second most important part of the process after application. Rinse every part where you applied baking soda thoroughly so that no traces of the solution or sodium bicarbonate are left. Use a clean cloth or towel to do that and then finish off by applying a moisturizer.

Why do I say this part is very important? Well, the skin is naturally acidic (slightly). When you leave traces of baking soda (which is an alkaline) for an extended period, it will alter your skin’s natural pH. That is to say, it will remove the acid mantle that forms a protective barrier on the skin.

The grand effect is that you will be susceptible to skin infections, acne, and direct UV light. So, clean your skin off thoroughly before applying a moisturizer.


Are There Any Side Effects?


Unfortunately, there are a few side effects related to the use of baking soda for stretch marks. For one it can leave your skin looking severely dry. This is especially the case if you don’t clean the skin off properly and if you don’t apply a moisturizer afterward.

There’s also the possibility that you may experience skin irritation and inflammation. This is mostly down to the sensitivity level of your skin. To be on the safe side, start by applying a test patch on the hand before using baking soda on more sensitive parts of the body.

Leave the patch for at least 6 hours and watch how your skin reacts. If you see signs of rashes, acne or skin breakage, stop immediately.
